Right Back On The Wagon {Giveaway}
Posted: November 8, 2011 at 8:06 am
After a weekend full of celebrating (!!!) hearty food, lots of beer, ice cream, and pumpkin pie fudge, I felt ready to get back to my more normal way of eating today. I loaded up on many of my standard healthy eating favorites yesterday.
Oats for breakfast, Love Grown granola and Larabars for snacks, egg sandwich for lunch, and quinoa for dinner. Delicious!
I also felt really antsy to get in a workout. My legs were no longer sore, but I knew I needed to hold off on a run, so spin class it was!
I planned to take it really easy, but I should have known that my favorite instructor would pull more out of me. I actually credit her a lot with increasing my cardiovascular and my leg endurance during her tough workouts. She never fails to take me past my comfort zone. I truly think spin class helps my running. And I’m not just sucking up because she reads the blog either.
Hi, Sophie!!!
As always, it felt so great to get right back to the normal go of things. I keep way more motivation that way and I know it’s all part of maintaining my healthy habits. Which I am all about, especially during this time of the year with the numerous events and celebrations that happen.
Last week, I had the chance to sit in on a video chat with Bahar Takhtehchian, the senior associate health editor for SHAPE magazine.
Bahar shared lots of tips on remaining healthy during the holidays, including some of my favorites:
- When you know you will have a heavier dinner out, make sure to choose healthier options during the day.
- Focus on satiating foods that include fiber, protein, and healthy fats – such as some almonds and an apple – for snacks before big meals out, so the chance of overeating decreases.
- Get in whatever activity you can, because even 20 minutes can go a long way!
- Splurge on the things you can’t get throughout the year. If it’s not special, is it really worth it?
- Remember positive mantras like “Do I want a moment on the lips, or to take care of my body for a lifetime?” <—or something like that

I really enjoyed the chat. It covered many ideas I already knew, but it never hurts to reinforce good habits and gain that extra bit of motivation before such a busy and food laden time of year.
In fact, SHAPE magazine and Fiber One (the sponsor of the chat) have teamed up to help YOU as well. One lucky winner will receive:
- a one year subscription to SHAPE magazine
- a yoga mat
- a stability ball
- a water bottle
- a pedometer
- Fiber One brownies

My favorite way to stay in shape during the holidays is to keep moving, even if it means doing a short DVD workout or walking or running errands.
PS – congrats on your 1/2 marathon!
Honestly, I just choose to eat before parties, and not at the. This way my focus is on my friends, rather than the food there. Totally bah-humbug, but works 90% of the time.
my favorite on-the-go snack is always a bar! larabars are my absolute favorite, but i like clif and luna bars too!
I go for long runs when home for Christmas…it’s cold, but the nostalgia for childhood mades the runs so fun!
I love SHAPE magazine!
My favorite on-the-go snack is definitely carrots and hummus!
I tweeted about your giveaway through my Twitter handle, @SouthernJodi!
My favorite on-the-go snack is an apple!
I am terrible at not indulging during the holidays. So many parties, so many appetiziers. I try my best but sitting as far away from the food as possible and keeping a bottle of water in my hands to busy myself.
My favorite snack on the go is a blueberry banana smoothie with almond milk, flax seed, and vanilla protein powder. It is a sweet treat that feels indulgent and fills me up.
I stay healthy during the holiday season by keeping to a workout schedule. I’ve also found that depriving myself of that special something will only lead to me overeating something not so special later on, better choose that special something!
First off, i love reading SHAPE like seriously but i want to clarify that im not living in the US, so i dont know if i can actually join! but nevertheless, these are my tips to share! 😀
Tip #1: Waking up real early to do high intensity workout for 15~20 mins. though it feels so bad at that moment, you’ll realize how worth it is! plus, u get to party all out the rest of the day; feeling energized!
Tip #2: bring around a medium sized water bottle. this makes sure you drink water all day, because if you use a cup, chances are you wouldnt be drinking enough. keeps you full too!
Favourite snack: half/whole bar of Special K’s 90-Calorie bars. Flavour: Honey Nut yummmmmmm!
I take dessert to quite a few things, but I always leave the extras there or with the host- why bring them home again to be consumed when I’ve already had plenty?
I also usually just fill my plate with holiday-specific things during the big dinner. I can get corn all year round, but stuffing? Get on my plate!
My favorite snack on the go, is an apple and a handful of walnuts. Love it!
I make it a priority to geta workout in on the holidays and go for the protein packed options! When it comes to desert I usually want everything so I get a plate of options and share with people.
I was thinking that this year I may try wiring my jaw shut or shutting off all of the lights in my house and pretending it’s not the holidays. When Santa comes, I think I’ll just club him and tell him to come back next year.
I like to take carrots and celery or an apple and nuts as a on the go snack!
I always try to fit a run. I find it can be difficult to get out the door, especially when it’s cold outside and you’re surrounded by friends and family indoors, but once you make the commitment to lace up your shoes and get out the door, it is so rejuvenating (after the first few minutes of warming up 😉
Running during the holidays can relieve some of the tension and stress when you’re out of your normal routine. Plus it puts you in a better mood! 🙂

I’m nervous about not overdoing it during the holidays. My plan: eat super clean for the next couple of weeks, then only splurge on the things that I LOVE and can only get once a year. And also, time off from work means more time to get in some extra workouts.
My favorite snack would definitely be an apple, simplicity at its best!
You mean other than I both buy Fiber One bars and read Shape? I’d just say I stay healthy during the holidays by planning ahead. I don’t stop myself from indulging, but I try and make sure the rest of my day has been healthy. Also, the KEY for me is to stop when I’m no longer hungry. It’s fine to have the goodies, but probably not 3 plates of them. 😉
Great giveaway, yet again Tina!! 🙂 I LOVE that ‘moment on the lips’ mantra. I try to think of things like that too…instant gratification or long term satisfaction? Usually the latter wins!
Favorite snack on the go is either some almonds, hard boiled egg, string cheese or an apple. All very filling!
I shared your post on Facebook! 🙂
To stay healthy during the holidays, I eat the yummy desserts and things that I love while also still enjoying my healthy foods! And of course, I try to work out as much as I can during this time!
My favorite on-the-go snack has to be the small packages of Ritz cracker sandwiches with peanut butter or cheese. Gives me the crunch I want with a little protein.
My favorite on the go snacks are Lara bars and apples.
My go to snack is usually some fruit = apple, banana, or grapes.
when I am wanting chocolate I usually grab a fiber bar some some sort!
I make sure to try and fit one intense sweat session before the big “eating” holidays. Starting off the day with a workout helps me feel “healthy” from the start and that tends to stick with me for the rest of the day.
My favorite snack is an apple smeared with peanut butter. For the holidays, I want to indulge, but make smart choices and choose things that I truly want to try instead of just eating everything and keeping up on my workouts.
My plan for the holidays is to eat lightly on days I know I’ll be eating at a big family dinner and to get in some type of exercise that day. I think it was in the most recent SHAPE magazine that I saw an article on pie that was really eye opening. Pumpkin is my fave & I will definitely be saving room for it!!
For the holidays, I usually allow myself the holiday to splurge. But only one day. I really don’t think it’s the one day of stuffing myself full is what leads to a few extra pounds, but rather the few weeks of eating pie and Christmas candy!
And fun fact! Spinning and cycling do actually help your running! And not just the endurance but because the cadence of pedaling helps you increase your leg turnover in running! I learned this while training for my triathlon! It’s very helpful for me because I find my knees just can’t handle when I run a lot, but I can still get faster by biking!
I stay healthy during the holidays by bringing a dish I know I’ll want to eat to get togethers!
I just tweeted!!!
My brother and his wife live out of town, so when they are visiting around the Holidays we always make an effort to run together in the mornings. It’s a perfect way to catch up on life and sneak in a little exercise before it’s time to enjoy all the yummy food!
My favorite snack is a Fuji apple!
My favorite on-the-go snack is a fiber one bar. I keep one with me all the time!
I usually eat whatever I want during the holidays. If I have something indulgent, I naturally eat less at other meals. Plus I run more this time of year since the weather is so nice, and I’m a lot busier with errands, decorating, etc.. All the extra time on my feet add up.
Now we’ll see as I start getting older and my metabolism slows even more, but it’s been working so far!
I make sure to exercise and fill up on a healthy breakfast when I know I will be indulging during the holidays!
My fav snack on the go is a banana with PB or an apple with PB!
No tips here, I always indulge during the holidays! But I do try to make my portions smaller.
I stay healthy during the holidays by fitting in workouts whenever I can and by limiting my “treats”. I keep my snacks as healthy as possible and don’t over do it at my holiday meals by keeping my portions small but still have a bit of everything!
I shared this giveaway on twitter!
I usually try and reign in the holiday over-eating, but this year I’ll be 8 months pregnant at Christmas so I will not even worry about it until next year!
Tweeted!
I don’t have the best self-control during the holidays so I try to eat a little less or very healthy during the day so I can splurge a little at night/party/etc!
I love Shape, in fact I credit them with my desire to write health & fitness. I’ve been an avid reader for years! But anyway, as far as staying healthy during the holidays go, I make sure to get in a workout every day like normal and if something is really indulgent but I don’t want to skip it I split it with my husband or take a couple bites and save the rest for later. And I don’t stress if I overdo it one day, I just make sure to make up for it the next!
I didn’t see any way to share on this post 🙁
thanks for the giveaway, tina!
to stay healthy during the holidays, i take lots of walks to see christmas lights on houses in my nieghbourhood and the “wonders of winter” light display in waterloo park, across from where i live!
What a fun giveaway! For the holidays, I know if I don’t stay consistent in my workouts then the rest of the day goes downhill. I’m okay with more rest days in this time, but I know that if I can get a good workout in I’m more likely to make better choices throughout the day in regards to my eating and drinking. Interesting how those things affect each other! Looking forward to staying consistent as well as to the treats that are to come! 😀
I like to make healthy versions of the classics. It is not hard and often people like the healthy version just as much!!
I have many on-the-go snack favorites, but a few are a piece of fruit or a bar of some sort (usually lara or luna). Sometimes I like dry cereal too 🙂
I love the tip to only eat things that are special during the holidays! So smart!
