Right Back On The Wagon {Giveaway}

Posted: November 8, 2011 at 8:06 am

After a weekend full of celebrating (!!!) hearty food, lots of beer, ice cream, and pumpkin pie fudge, I felt ready to get back to my more normal way of eating today. I loaded up on many of my standard healthy eating favorites yesterday.

Picasa2_thumb[2]

Oats for breakfast, Love Grown granola and Larabars for snacks, egg sandwich for lunch, and quinoa for dinner. Delicious!

I also felt really antsy to get in a workout. My legs were no longer sore, but I knew I needed to hold off on a run, so spin class it was!

I planned to take it really easy, but I should have known that my favorite instructor would pull more out of me. I actually credit her a lot with increasing my cardiovascular and my leg endurance during her tough workouts. She never fails to take me past my comfort zone. I truly think spin class helps my running. And I’m not just sucking up because she reads the blog either. Winking smile Hi, Sophie!!!

As always, it felt so great to get right back to the normal go of things. I keep way more motivation that way and I know it’s all part of maintaining my healthy habits. Which I am all about, especially during this time of the year with the numerous events and celebrations that happen.

Last week, I had the chance to sit in on a video chat with Bahar Takhtehchian, the senior associate health editor for SHAPE magazine.

Bahar shared lots of tips on remaining healthy during the holidays, including some of my favorites:

  • When you know you will have a heavier dinner out, make sure to choose healthier options during the day.
  • Focus on satiating foods that include fiber, protein, and healthy fats – such as some almonds and an apple – for snacks before big meals out, so the chance of overeating decreases.
  • Get in whatever activity you can, because even 20 minutes can go a long way!
  • Splurge on the things you can’t get throughout the year. If it’s not special, is it really worth it?
  • Remember positive mantras like “Do I want a moment on the lips, or to take care of my body for a lifetime?” <—or something like that Winking smile

I really enjoyed the chat. It covered many ideas I already knew, but it never hurts to reinforce good habits and gain that extra bit of motivation before such a busy and food laden time of year.

In fact, SHAPE magazine and Fiber One (the sponsor of the chat) have teamed up to help YOU as well. One lucky winner will receive:

  • a one year subscription to SHAPE magazine
  • a yoga mat
  • a stability ball
  • a water bottle
  • a pedometer
  • Fiber One brownies

  1. I tweeted your post/giveaway 🙂

  2. Jess says:

This is my favorite fit tip for the holidays: Splurge on the things you can’t get throughout the year. If it’s not special, is it really worth it?

I can have a brownie any old day right? But can I have my mother-in-law’s famous whoopie pies any other day than on Christmas Eve? I think not! 🙂

Great giveaway, I want to win!

  3. Eeek! I’d love to win this giveaway. 🙂

My favorite on-the-go snack is either a LaraBar or Luna Bar. I also love pieces of fruit like pears, bananas, or apples to quick stick in my purse.

  4. Cynthia says:

I always eat a small snack before a holiday party or big dinner. The hungrier I am, the more likely it is that I will overindulge.

  5. Bonnie says:

Tweeted about the giveaway – spreadin’ the word through my favorite social media site. 😉 (@boninelang) Thanks again!

  6. favorite on the go snack? larabars or trailmix or fruit!

  7. Sarah says:

I take a few extra walks during the holidays. The cool weather invigorates my body and calms my mind, a perfect setup for indulging in holiday foods in a healthy way 🙂

  8. I really believe spin helps my running too! When I decided to start training I hadn’t really run ever or even been trying to in over a year, but I had been doing a lot of spin and I feel like it got me at a cardiovascular place where my body could handle me beginning to run. My fav snack probably of all time is just an apple with a tablespoon of almond or sunflower butter. It always sounds good!

  9. I actually haven’t stayed healthy during the holidays in the past. This time though I signed up for my goal half which falls in January, so that I am forced to work out.

  10. Kirsten says:

Spinning is a great alternative to running! I love how the instructors really push you, they always leave me huffing and puffing. Running stairs or bleachers is also great cardio.

My go to snack is usually a Kashi bar or an apple.

  11. K says:

My favorite on the go snack right now is black cherry greek yogurt, or when I don’t have somewhere to keep my snack cool, a PB&J sandwich, yummy and filling!

  12. Kendra says:

Oh, and I also shared this on my blog’s FB page.

  13. Kirsten says:

    I tweeted.

    Also, congrats on your race!

  14. bebe says:

wow, healthy during the holidays? yikes. I find it a little easier trying to eat the same meals as my food allergy kiddo. No dairy, no bread (stuffing) and no desserts.
The veggies are the only good part of holiday food anyways, i think. When i am in charge of Thanksgiving dinner (when i grow up) we are eating something much more fun than turkey, stuffing, and pie…. ick.

  15. I think it is really helpful to eat a light and healthy breakfast/mid-morning snack when you know you are going to have a big dinner (like on Thanksgiving). It makes me feel like I still have balance in my meals and I don’t feel as guilty when I stuff myself silly at dinner!

  16. cheryl says:

i am a cereal addict and always eat it dry. in a tupperware, it can be great on the go too! fiber one is actually a daily part of my cereal obsession!!

  17. Luanne says:

The great thing about going home for the holidays is the walking we do. My dad lives in a small town (less than 1000). We all just walk everywhere. Want a soda from the convenience store? Walk. Need a can of pumpkin before the grocery store closes? Walk. Want a private talk with someone? Go for a walk! For Christmas and Thanksgiving we will drive to church, but otherwise all 20 of us will put kiddos in strollers and walk whenever almost everywhere.

  18. Beth says:

Favorite holiday tip: Focus on homemade items and not prepackaged items (ie homeade pumpkin pie vs store bought pumpkin cookies). Also on non-holiday days I fill up on a ton of veggies and drink lots of water.

  19. Anna says:

I usually enjoy holiday runs with my dad/mother-in-law (depending on which family I’m visiting), but right now I’m into my third week of no running due to an injury 🙁 I’m hoping to be able to get going again soon, for those traditional holiday runs! And in the meantime, my yoga class last night kicked my butt, love it!

  20. Annie says:

Honestly, I just enjoy the holidays. I try not to gorge myself, but I will definitely have my dad’s homemade oatmeal cookies for breakfast at least once. 🙂
Homemade treats definitely win over store bought and I try to make sure I am still getting lots of veggies in my body.

  21. Michelle says:

My favorite on-the-go snack is edamame. All that protein really helps to hold me over until my next meal.

  22. Rachel says:

I stay healthy by trying to have everything in moderation – including sweets and holiday food, as well as regular holiday exercise.

  23. So fun! My favorite on the go snack is either trail mix (with nuts and dried fruit) or a bar (cliff, lara, etc). But through the holidays, I think the key is to not let your everyday healthy behaviors slide just because it’s the holidays. Still make it to the gym when you can (or however you get your exercise) and don’t overeat. There’s so much great food during the holidays but that doesn’t mean you have to eat ALL of it and then go back for more. Moderation is key.

  24. Khushboo says:

Nak’d bars are my favorite on-the-go snack..lightweight, wholesome and delicious!

  25. Love these tips you shared, Tina! They are brilliant. I definitely pull the “snack before going out to eat” trick throughout the whole year. My eyes are ALWAYS bigger than my stomach, and it helps keep my from over-eating AND over-ordering (therefore saving me calories and money!)

I’d love to win the giveaway- shape magazine is so awesome! Thanks for the opportunity! & Congrats on your awesome race!!! Yay you!!!!

  26. Rachel says:

    I tweeted! @RachelhopB

  27. FAB giveaway — I love Shape!

I stay healthy by keeping up the normal workout routine despite the craziness of parties, etc. As long as I keep moving, I can still indulge!

  28. My trick to staying healthy during the holidays is to bring your own foods to parties. Basically, if you’re going to a potluck, make something delicious yet healthy, and only allow yourself to have one small plate of unhealthy options. That way, if you make something healthy that you want to eat, you don’t have to choose the sugary options.

  29. Jamie says:

I make sure to only celebrate on the actual holidays. I don’t make it a month of solid eating. I do indulge on Christmas and Thanksgiving but I don’t eat extra calories on any other day during that time. I stay far away from all of the office treats, 300 calorie “special” lattes, and sweets. If you only indulge in two meals and keep up your workouts, it is not a big deal.

  30. julie bourke says:

oooh would love to win this, especially because i had to cancel my subscription to shape due to lack of extracurricular funds 🙁

my fav snack on the go; i put in a ziplock a few raw almonds, a spoon and a single-serve unsweetened applesauce and keep that in my purse ( i usually prefer a real apple but because im weird and only like them cold out of the refrigerator, apple sauce it is for the purse! lol

  31. Heather B says:

Congrats on your race!! I never miss a workout during the holidays, it makes indulging feel a little better!!

  32. megan says:

My favorite snack on-the-go: trail mix or a piece of fruit.

So excited for this giveaway! Fingers crossed 🙂

  33. Anna Marie says:

My favorite way to stay healthy during the holidays is to go to group work out classes and buddy up with friends to help keep me accountable at the gym.

  34. Donna from Chicago says:

What an awesome giveaway. Love your blog. 🙂

My fav snack is peanut butter and apples. sweet and salty. mmmm

  35. To stay healthy during the holidays I always avoid dessert. Luckily I don’t really care for dessert unless it is ice cream so it is an easy way to save a bunch of calories.

  36. Heidi says:

I love smoothies, fruit, cliff bars, and whole wheat crackers for snacks on the go!

  37. stephanie*s says:

My favorite on the go snack is Sargento String Cheese- for some reason I cannot stand other brands. Which is sad because Sargento has a hard time fitting in my budget!

I need to get back on the workout band-wagon, so my way to stay slim through the holidays will be to discipline and enjoy!

  38. allison says:

my favorite on the go snacks are cliff bars! especially the holiday flavors:):)

  39. Jamie says:

My strategy is to bypass the so-so food and select only the once-a-year treats. And if I don’t like something, I won’t continue to eat on it. Move on, folks! I also don’t take leftovers home!

  40. Kat says:

during the holidays, I try to squeeze in workouts when I can – an early morning run, yoga before dinner, walks with the fam. and fruit and veggies are my fave for on the go snacking!

  41. RunEatRepeat says:

This week my favorite on the go snacks are Luna bars because they seem like a treat!

  42. Sonja says:

Staying healthy during the holidays is so hard to me!

The most important thing for me is to work out regularly and to indulge in special treats I only eat during the holidays.

  43. My favorite snack on the go is granola:)

  44. My favourite on-the-go snack would have to be larabars or vega vibrance bars (the chocolate ones).

  45. Kathleen says:

Getting camping food last week reminded me that dried apricots are one of my favorite on-the-go snacks.

  46. Morgan says:

I stay healthy with water, water and more water!!!
