What Is Sexy?

Posted: January 29, 2011 at 7:33 pm

I hate that sexy has such a connotation of sex appeal. Sexy to me is so many other things. Besides, sometimes its more fun to say “I feel sexy” instead of “I feel pretty”.

To me, sexy is feeling confident in your appearance…but more confident in who you are as a person, like being a mother.

Sexy is understanding your responsibility to others…and owning it.

While I would never base my self-image on someone else, it still feels sexy to be irresistible to someone else.

Sexy is taking care of yourself because you believe you’re worth it.

Sexy is dreaming big and allowing yourself to work towards those dreams.

Sexy is standing up for what you believe.

Sexy is whatever you want to make it. How do you describe sexy?

  1. Love. This. Post! And that OB note is amazing!!

You summed up what ‘sexy’ is for me exactly: “sexy is feeling confident in your appearance…but more confident in who you are as a person”. I couldn’t agree with you more 🙂

  2. Camille says:

Sexy is being confident! The most beautiful person in the world can be the least sexy if they don’t love themselves!

  3. Erica says:

Great post. I agree- sexy is much more of a feeling than a “look”. And it is definitely something you have to own. I really LOVE how much you LOVE being a mom 🙂

  4. Sexy is being comfortable in your own skin and knowing that you are valuable.

  5. I love this post because sexy means something different to everyone. I think sexy is loving yourself first and foremost and feeling confident with who you are. The rest are just added bonuses!

  6. I agree with all of these…sexy is knowing who you are and rocking it!

  7. Melie says:

I love the post! But for me, sexy is still a connotation for sex appeal. What sexy is NOT though, is a synonym to attractive or beautiful or happy. What you describe to me is being attractive and happy in your own skin. And I admire you to no ends! 🙂 Sexy is only a part of that description and not even the most important part imho…

  8. This is a beautiful post, Tina! To be honest, when I’m having a day where, for whatever reason, I’m not feeling great about my body, I don’t feel sexy. But you are so right – sexy can be about so much more than sex appeal. I would much rather think of it the way you do 🙂 That is a precious picture of you and your daughter.

  9. When I was five, I remember telling my mom that sexy was a red dress and high heels – oh what the media does to young children! Now though, I would define sexy as having the confidence from loving yourself inside and out.

  10. Hm, what a fresh perspective! I always think of “sexy” with such a negative connotation. So much so that I don’t like it when anyone refers to me as sexy! I like your take on it, and I think I should learn to take it as a compliment. 😉

  11. I think you touched on all of what sexy is…I feel sexiest when I am confident in my own skin, passionate about my beliefs, irresistible to others, AND wearing heels, or rockin a worn pair of converse. Confident to my core equals sexy to me.

  12. Lisa says:

    Amazing insight, yet again.

  13. To me, sexy means having confidence within yourself and being happy with who you are! And not being afraid to show it 😉

  14. laura says:

    I LOVE this!
    You described sexy perfectly.

  15. Emily says:

Sexy is being smart and not afraid to show it to anyone. It’s also being confident in the amazing person that you already are 🙂

  16. Helen says:

Confidence = Sexy! I believe that confidence and loving yourself completely is what makes a person sexy. Of course a nice pair of heels and a cute little dress for that date night just adds to the sexiness 🙂

  17. this post rocks, tina!

and with you being a new mom, lactating, with a 2 yr old running around after just having given birth and sleep deprived and the word sexy is even in your vocab…major props to YOU!!!

sexy is a mindset. confidence and knowing who you are and where you stand on things…that’s sexy to me.

    • Tina says:

And I’m sure you can relate that managing those types of things makes you feel pretty strong…and hence the sexy, confident feeling.;)

  18. This post was awesome. I think that sexiness comes from confidence for sure!

  19. Sexy is all about confidence for sure. And it’s taken me awhile to come to that conclusion. I suffered for too long being not confident but recently my confidence has grown, and it is showing. People approach me more and I feel…dare I say, sexy! 😀

  20. I think sexy IS sex appeal, you can’t seperate them, but sexiness comes from all of these things, not just how you look

  21. Stephanie says:

Sexy is owning who you are and being confidant and all that you can do with your mind, body and spirit. YOU Tina are a very sexy mother/woman/blogger! 🙂

  22. I love this.
I think sexiness comes from confidence. Being confident and comfortable in who you are is the sexiest thing ever.

  23. That first picture is too much–she is like your mini-me! You have the cutest family.

I agree that sexiness relates to confidence. I feel sexy when I feel powerful and in control. I also feel sexy when I look HOT. Never hurts to look good!

  24. Heather says:

I always associate sexiness with confidence. Sometimes it’s an event or an action that can make me feel sexy or hey, sometimes, it can be that new pair of killer heels! Anything that makes you look at yourself in the mirror and want to raise your chin up an inch or two.

By the way, you look totally sexy in that red dress! 😉

  25. Sexy is KNOWING who you are and living a life by the values and principles you believe in. It’s ENJOYING life–even it’s imperfections. It’s accepting that you and others aren’t perfect. It’s walking with confidence, but realizing that sometimes you won’t feel confident (and that’s okay!).

I feel sexy when I laugh and dance. 🙂

  26. jassy says:

matching outfit in the first pic is so cute! 🙂

    you are so blessed 🙂

  27. Allie says:

It DOES feel sexy to be irresistible to someone else 🙂 Such an awesome post, as usual 😉 Little M is so adorable! I love her smile.

  28. I think sexy is OWNING who you are, in every way.

  29. oh goodness I don’t know that I’ve ever ever thought about sexy in this way. In fact I’ve never really thought of myself as sexy. It’s interesting to see what weight we give certain words. Like yesterday I wrote about all the different things that “balance” can mean. I’m certainly going to start looking at the word sexy in a new light – thanks 🙂

    • Tina says:

I loved that post of yours. I have a hard time commenting sometimes when reading through my reader since I have to type 1 handed while b’feeding. I hope you are feeling much better after the meds. Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do.

  30. Great post! I definitely agree that sexy is being irresistible to someone else. But I also think sexy is being confident and independent. Or, accomplishing a fitness goal.

  31. Sexy is strong, confident, and determined!

  32. […] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Tina Reale, Tina Reale. Tina Reale said: What Is Sexy?: I hate that sexy has such a connotation of sex appeal. Sexy to me is so many other things. Beside… http://bit.ly/gpGFbi […]

  33. Anne Marie says:

I love this post!! I’ve definitely put on some holiday pounds, and although I feel self conscious, I know hubby thinks I’m beautiful.

He brought home pizza, samoas and ice cream for dinner last night, so he must not be too worried about my weight!

  34. Yeah, I hate how that word is misused. No wonder our society is oversexualized. I don’t know how I would define it now — I used to think it meant that you looked like a celebrity or something. =(

  35. emily says:

    Confidence is super sexy!

  36. Jolene says:

sexy is self confidence. Sometimes I have a harder time working at that than others. Great post, love your thoughts and the pictures!

  37. sexy is confidence, and doing what you love. great post!

  38. Sexy is allll about attitude and believing in yourself. I am a sexy beast! 😉

  39. I love that OB note – totally putting that up in the gym tomorrow!

  40. I love this post!

For me, sexy is all about your attitude.

  41. Great post! For me, sexy is feeling confident, irresistible, and comfortable. There is nothing sexy about a gorgeous woman who is obviously uncomfortable with herself.
