Self-Love Reflections: Outward Beauty

Posted: April 3, 2011 at 5:04 pm

During the self-love reflection topics, we have discussed many varying ideas that relate to living our best life and loving ourselves fully in the process. We discuss aspects of our minds (perspective), our bodies (trusting their intuitive nature), and our hearts (love from others motivating love for self).

Our inner workings truly make us beautiful. Our outward characteristics do so as well…and not just because what our bodies can do, like we share in the gifts of the body posts. We must also believe the term “beautiful” can be an accurate way to describe our physical appearance.

No two people on this Earth share the exact same physical characteristics. Even identical twins up close display different features thanks to different experiences and preferences. The uniqueness of you alone is enough to make you beautiful. We each have alluring qualities in which we can build our confidence and recognize as attractive.

We cannot definitively define beauty, as each culture and every individual within that culture holds a distinct opinion of what classifies beauty. Do not allow the trap of popular opinion to ensnare you into thinking you lack beauty. That simply is not true. Find what you think makes you beautiful and take pride in it. What feature do you deep within your gut know makes you physically beautiful? Do not believe any different and bask in the gratification of honoring your unique appeal.

We must not forget that outward appearance does not define our worth as a whole. However, me must also feel free to declare our beauty on the outside. We all desire it…and we all have it.

What physical characteristic makes you beautiful? I have always received compliments on my eyes and I truly think they are beautiful. They are big and a vibrant green. I love how unique they are to me.

Love this post and needed to read it (as usual). I’m always nitpicking myself. M tells me I am beautiful at least once a day and almost every time, I shoot him down and say ‘nah.’ WHY do I do that? It’s not cool, but I still do it. One of the things I hope to nix one of these days.

  2. Lori Lynn says:

I’ve always liked my eyes as well- I have hazel eyes. I’ve always wanted to wear contacts, b/c sometimes I think my glasses cover them up, but I’ve never been able to find a pair that doesn’t bother my eyes!

  3. lindsay says:

yes, your eyes are beautiful. I think a lot of self love has to come from within. Like you said. As the years go by, i learn to not accept, but to embrace my flaws. Those are the flaws God gave me and are beautiful in his eyes.
    🙂

  4. What a wonderful post! It’s so true that we all need to break out of the need to be conventionally beautiful. I like my legs as they are strong but I also think my ridiculous amount of moles are fun and set me apart! 🙂

  5. Lauren says:

Love this post! Inward beauty is so important, but feeling confident in your outward beauty is an awesome feeling. I love having red hair because it’s unique and so pretty in my opinion.

  6. I love that your blog reminds me to take the time to reevaluate beauty and what it really means. When I’m in a good frame of mind it’s easy for me to think in a self-loving way, but when I’m in a negative frame of mind and spend too much time around the wrong people or the wrong messages, it can be easy to forget.
I love my dimples – people always comment on them, and I think they really make my smile unique!

  7. Great post Tina – I get compliments on my eyes and my skin — which I really appreciate hearing! I don’t wear makeup (unless it is a special occasion like my wedding!) so having someone tell me I have nice skin makes me feel so good!

  8. Errign says:

I get lots of compliments on my reddish hair color & despite all of the ginger jokes, I really do love my hair color. I think it’s fabulous!

  9. amazing post. I need this right now. I have always been told my eyes were captivating as well. I have baby blue eyes, olive skin and dark brown hair so the combination for some reason makes my eyes stand out. I embrace it 🙂

    • Tina says:

You definitely have gorgeous eyes, Naomi! And I’m going to reply to your email later today. Love you!

  10. Lisa says:

What a hard topic…I spent so many years hating every inch of my body because I was obese. It was a hard habit to break even after I lost the weight.

I’m finally at a place where I like my body. I like my strength and stamina and how I look. And I’ve realized that the number on the scale is less important.

I get compliments on my hair a lot. 🙂

  11. ashley says:

great topic. i truly think every year i accept myself more. i find things about myself beautiful that i hated 10 years ago. it makes me think also about how many celebrities are more beautiful looking at 35 than 25. seems like it must have to do with gaining confidence and understanding of yourself!

  12. To be perfectly honest with you, I’ve always liked a lot about my physical appearance. What I like the most though are my eyes. They change colors!

  13. Sarah says:

Lovely post. It’s so easy to get caught up in the “ideal” female image. But like you, I love my eyes. Big and blue like the ocean that always tell the truth.

  14. Becca says:

I like being a redhead… 🙂 Until the last couple of years, I’d been sick of hearing things about my hair. But now I can accept the compliments/comments with a smile and a “thank you.” 🙂
I’ve also been told that my smile is really natural…

As usual, wonderful post! Great reminder. 😀

  15. Hi friend. Thank you for the positive reminder that outward beauty is only that… on the outside. For me, my physical charateristic that I love is my big brown eyes.

I agree with the comment above, that as I get older I have grown more comfortable in my skin. Perhaps that is what happens after having children and accepting that there are more important things than ‘perfection’. 🙂

    Thanks for another great post!

  16. Tanya says:

I recently just discovered your blog through hearing about the 30 Days of Self Love and I am so inspired! It reached me just at the right moment, too.

So I just thought I would stop by and show my appreciation and say thank you. You definitely have a new reader. 🙂

    • Tina says:

Thank you so much. I’m glad the messages are speaking to you since its something I felt (and still feel) so strongly about. 🙂

  17. People tell me I have great skin cause I rarelly wear any make-up but the secret is…not washing my face, just use a make-up remover for cleaning my eyes of impurities.

It seems to me like we’re just hiding under statements like ” Our souls are beautifull”. Yep, but let’s face it. It needs a conscious effort on a daily basis . So, we should be able to recognise our physical beauty too.

    Great post, Tina!

  18. I love this post!!!! 🙂

I was blessed with naturally curly, low maintenance hair…and there’s no shame in being proud of that! 🙂

    • Tina says:

I have low maintenance hair too…but its because its so thin. I would love some curl and volume! Definitely a beautiful look. 🙂

  19. Kim says:

Great post – as always – thanks for the pic from the Dove campaign – it definitely reinforces your message and I love seeing it.

  20. I love my eyes! Great post.

  21. Such a pretty post and a great reminder. I would say my hair. It makes me happy and I love how healthy and full it is!

  22. I love this post. I seem to be with everyone here and like my eyes as well, so I’m gonna say I love my lips 🙂

  23. LauraJayne says:

I’ve been told that I have a beautiful smile – but I really like my eyes – I always feel better when I put a little mascara on – so I rarely leave the house without it!

  24. I love this post, Tina! I have always been told that I have pretty eyes – very big and expressive! It’s always nice to hear that. 🙂

  25. “We must not forget that outward appearance does not define our worth as a whole. However, me must also feel free to declare our beauty on the outside. We all desire it…and we all have it.”

Totally agree with both parts of this!

I have always thought that I have really nice legs and also like my eyes and thick blond hair. 🙂

  26. Stacy says:

Great post! I’d have to say my smile. Although I have a gap between my front teeth and some people would think this lacks beauty, I find it to be one of my unique assets. Dentists and orthodontists have asked if I want to fix it, but I don’t because it’s me. I am also not afraid to show it with my big smile that I flash quite often. Just the act of smiling makes me feel happy and beautiful!

    • Tina says:

I have a small gap too that dentists always tried to get me to fix but I never did because I liked it. Unique is fun. 🙂
